👋 Hello everyone,
Here are a couple of resources you might have missed:
📚 Book Summary:
This week's book is "The Feedback Imperative" by Anna Carroll.
Everyone wants feedback, yet it takes courage to give it. Anna Carroll's book shares tools for providing more frequent and effective feedback. The book makes you realize that as a people manager, you are your team's primary resource for feedback. Not only can you make your team happier at work, but feedback loops also drive better results for the company. Now, as a leader, embrace your role and be brave.
One of my favorite take aways from the book is this:
"Research on feedback shows that a manager's emotional messages are so strong that even negative (or corrective) feedback can be received positively when delivered in a calm and positive manner. Calm delivery prevents the fight-or-flight trigger. Conversely, positive feedback delivered by a stressed-out or otherwise negative-sounding manager can be received negatively by the employee. Either way, the manager's level of stress or calm is directly transmitted to the receiver."
✅ Actionable advice:
Remember, as a leader, you are the best option for an employee to receive useful feedback. To ensure your feedback is well-received, manage your emotional state: be calm, present, and empathetic. When we get upset from feedback, the limbic system diverts blood from the brain to the arms and legs, triggering a fight-or-flight. Not surprising that feedback is difficult.
Be clear about what you observed, the impact it had, and what you would like to see happen next. Finally, ask for feedback in return, listen carefully, and act on it.
