👋 Hello everyone,
General Patton said, “If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn’t thinking. Listening to diverse perspectives is crucial for effective decision-making.”
Here are four resources you might have missed:
📚 Book Summary:
This week's book is "Risk" by General Stanley McChrystal and Anna Butrico.
There is much to learn from a four-star General who shares his battle-tested knowledge on mitigating risk. As the world seems more complex, effective risk management is more crucial than ever. This book offers great examples, ranging from war situations to the government’s response to COVID-19.
One of my favorite takeaways from the book is this:
Diversity isn't a nice-to-do; it's a need-to-do. Different perspectives and skills increase our effectiveness. It's a powerful strength for any organization and the difference between winning and losing. The more you aim for diversity in the perspectives you seek and incorporate, the stronger your Risk Immune System becomes. However, be aware that achieving diversity requires deliberate action.
✅ Actionable advice:
As a leader, it’s not enough to mandate a more diverse hiring process or establish employee resource groups. You need to lead from the front by creating an environment where diverse individuals feel safe sharing their ideas. Take action by actively inviting input from quieter team members during meetings and ensuring you recognize and appreciate everyone’s contributions. You can start this right now, taking the time to hear different perspectives, operate with a growth mindset, and, in the process, enhance your team’s effectiveness.
