📚 Book Summary:

This week's book is "Getting to Yes" by Roger Fisher and William Ury.


“Getting to Yes” takes the power struggle out of negotiations and promotes win-win outcomes. This isn’t the book for squeezing the best price on your next car purchase. However, if you’re frequently negotiating with another division within your company, it will teach you how to reach mutually beneficial agreements.


One of my favorite takeaways from the book is this:

You negotiate to produce something better than the results you can obtain without negotiating. You start by seeing the situation as the other side sees it. As difficult as it may be, it is the most important skill a negotiator can possess. It is not enough to know that they see things differently. If you want to influence them, you also need to understand empathetically the power of their point of view and to feel the emotional force with which they believe in it. It is not enough to study them like beetles under a microscope; you need to know what it feels like to be a beetle.


✅ Actionable advice:

The absolute best result in negotiations is terms that make both parties winners, especially if you must regularly engage with the opposite side. Start by showing the other party you understand them: "I want to ensure I'm getting this right. From your point of view, the situation looks like this..." Understanding is not agreeing. One can, at the same time, understand perfectly and disagree entirely with what the other side is saying. Your objective is to gather more information, even if you feel pressure. Often, we are so focused on our interests that we neglect those of others. By shifting this focus, you can transform negotiations into opportunities to create value and build stronger relationships.
