Leaders Read#80

Writer: Lars ChristensenLars Christensen

👋 Hello everyone,

Coach George Raveling said, "Some people say ‘I don’t have time.’ No, all you have is time. It’s how you prioritize your time that matters."

Here are a few resources you might have missed:

📚 Book Summary:

This week's book is "Align" by Jonathan Trevor.

This book will help you understand that business purpose comes before strategy and that organizational capability, organizational architecture, and the management system are just as critical as strategy.

One of my favorite takeaways from the book is this:

"A senior executive I worked with recently described the trade-off as: 'Despite what the gurus say, you can't play basketball and tennis on the same court at the same time and expect to be good at either.'"

✅ Actionable advice:

As a leader, you are always in danger of stretching yourself too thin by getting involved in too much. When former basketball coach George Raveling joined Nike at 63, the president, Richard Donahue, asked the team, "Would we be better off doing 25 things good or 5 things great?" Focusing on key areas ensures you deliver high-quality results and drive impactful outcomes. Coach Raveling still applies that strategy to this day: "Every day, on a notecard, I write down 5-6 things I want to get done that day. Every day, I cross these off and tear up the card. That's it. That's the system."
