The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi

I finished this book in August 2024. I recommend this book 1/10.

Why you should read this book:

I would only recommend that you read this book if you have already read Eiji Yoshikawa's fictional book based on the author Miyamoto Musashi. The book was written as a manifesto of the Way in Martial Arts by the most famous samurai who ever lived.

🚀 The book in three sentences

  1. Always be dedicated to what you do; also, when resting.

  2. Always go for the kill.

  3. Be observant of your mind. Always be learning.

📝 My notes and thoughts

  • P30. In the Way of the Martial Arts, do not let your frame of mind be any different from your everyday mind. In both everyday and military events, your mind should not change in the least, but should be broad and straightforward, neither drawn too tight nor allowed to slacken even a little. Keep the mind in the exact fully, not allowing it to become sidetracked; let it sway peacefully, not allowing it to stop doing so for even a moment. You should investigate these things thoroughly. Do not let your mind stand still even when you are in repose, but do not let it speed up even when you are involved in quick actions. The mind should not be distracted by the body, nor the body distracted by the mind.

  • P51. In the midst of the fight, if you are intent on making your opponent flinch, you will have already obtained the victory. For this reason, you should not forget about stabbing at your opponent's face. Among the disciplines of the martial arts, this is a principle you should practice.

  • P62. Who in this world can obtain my correct Way of the Martial Arts? Whoever would get to the heart of it, let him do so with conviction, practicing in the morning and training in the evening. After he has polished his techniques and gained independent freedom of movement, he will naturally gain miraculous powers, and his free and easy strength will be wonderful. This is the spirit wherein, as a warrior, he will put these practices into action.

  • P113. In Emptiness exists Good but no Evil.

    • Wisdom is Existence.

    • Principle is Existence.

    • The Way is Existence.

    • The Mind is Emptiness.
